âAll right, folks,â Bill said. âRace dayâs cominâ quick. We gotta get back to work.â
âSo what are we gonna do with him?â Trevor asked Bill, pointing down at Revver. âYou want me to grab a broom and shoo him out?â
âCanât we keep him round? Heâs awfully sweet,â someone answered.
âOh, right! Big Jack would just love that!â said someone else. âHeâd welcome a rodent hanging around his team, messinâ things up.â
Revver was not sure what a rodent was, but it did not sound like something good. Revver, eyes filled with hope, looked up at Bill.
Someone else spoke up. âBill, how many times have we heard Jack say, âNo fur or filth allowed. This is a spotless operation!â He wonât even let his own family dog in here!â
Bill ran his hand through his hair as he looked down at Revver. âWell, he might not mess things up too badly . . .â
Laughing, Susan pointed at the floor behind Revver. âI suppose ole Jack would be thrilled with squirrel turds all over his shiny floor, then.â
Sure enough, Revver had dropped a few in all the excitement.
Bill bent over toward Revver and pointed at the poop. âAny chance you might be able to try to keep this OUTside?â Revver looked and sniffed. He studied the issue carefully. Surely he could remember not to poop in the garage! Revver nodded quickly as he thought hard . . . âHe added another note to his brain burrow: No pooping in the garage.
Bill continued. âTell ya what, then. Iâll make you a deal, Revver. How âbout if I put you to work for a while? If you pick up the lugs I drop and bring âem back to me, Iâll trade ya for these.â He dug into his pocket and pulled out a peanut. âThatâll save me from having to sweep these up later,â he said, holding up the lug nut with his other hand. Bill gently set down the big, salty, delicious peanut. Revver did not hesitate to take the peanut and nibble.
âDoes that sound like a job for you?â Bill asked.
Revver could not believe his pointy little ears! He had a job! With a race team! He did, in fact, have a VALUABLE SKILL! It was more than he had ever imagined! Whoâd have thought it? I am perfectly suited for an actual JOB at the track! Fetching NUTS! Well, maybe not the kind of nuts I usually fetch, but a nut is a nut is a nut, right?!
Revver nodded, as best as a squirrel can nod, to make sure that Bill understood that this sounded like a fine arrangement.
âAnd no more poopinâ in here, right?â
Revver looked very serious. He shook his head to say no.
âWow, that is SOME special squirrel,â someone said.
Then everyone started talking at once.
âIf Jack finds out about this, heâll have a fit.â
âWell,â said Bill, âIâm not sure how the team owner could be upset with a helper who works for peanuts!â
Everyone laughed.
âSeriously, though, Bill, if that squirrel gets into any trouble, Jack will have our heads.
